The Zabrecky Hour

“Zabrecky – the name means ‘Abracadabra,’ sideways” – LA Weekly

In his one-person comedy magic and variety show, The Zabrecky Hour, multi-skilled artist Rob Zabrecky invites audiences into his remarkably curious world through comedic storytelling and beautifully presented magic effects. Like film director David Lynch, Zabrecky sets the stage for everyday life, then sets it on fire. The show features highlights from his six-time award-winning Magic Castle act, comedy, audience interaction, absurd parapsychology, and much more. Lauded by critics and audiences alike, in 2022 The Chicago Tribune raved, “Zabrecky is very funny, assuming you like your humor cynical and caustic, akin to a horror show of a bygone age. Zabrecky’s notable distinctive brand of comedy and magic is one thing, but his improvisational skills and his evident love of pushing things right to the edge and then maybe a little further, are another.” At times there’s a sense that you’re watching an alien from a lost 1950s sci-fi/horror B-movie who can barely function in today’s society, and he’s trying to put on a grand show for you — but it’s really starting to get on his nerves.

Zabrecky’s dry and austere comedy is the key to the show’s success. But it’s delivered with a black cat-like energy in a dry, crisp fashion with quirky punchlines and an utterly deadpan commitment to the most absurd situations. You might catch flashes of Steven Wright, Robert Bloch, Emo Phillips, or even Alfred Hitchcock. After his appearance on Penn & Teller’s Fool Us, Penn Jillette remarked, “We were trying to think if there’s ever been a mentalist doing a mentalist act that was sincerely funny and sincerely good. You may be the first ever.” The Zabrecky Hour — a spellbinding evening of cross-pollinated magic, deadpan comedy, reverie, and even music that puts audience members in an altered state of mind. It’s strange, definitely strange. Strange in a way that you’ll never forget.
